How To Combat Summer Skin Problems

As we are all enjoying the warmer summer months and spending most of our time outdoors, we are probably noticing some pesky skin problems appear. Being outside more can take a toll on our skin. Between the direct UV rays and the extra sweat that stays on the surface from increased humidity, our skin can end up showing signs of inflammation and stress.

While issues such as heat rash and sunburn are common summer skin problems, you may also run into dry and irritated skin as well and even more difficult to treat issues such as folliculitis, specifically for men.

Here’s a short list of the most common concerns and how to help combat them:

  • Acne Breakouts - This is by far one of the more common skin issues. During the summer, higher temperatures and humidity can be some of the culprits. As you sweat, your pores become clogged by oils and bacteria on your skin. Over time, dirty and clogged pores can lead to both minor and major signs of acne. If you’re spending a good portion of your day in the heat and sweating, you should try to minimize the sweat on your skin which can help reduce the potential for acne. One way to do this, instead of using a dry cloth or towel to wipe your skin, blot it. Wiping can irritate your skin and stretch your pores leading to a higher chance of breakouts or inflammation. Blotting will not stretch your skin and can remove the same amount of surface sweat and other moisture.

* If you do find yourself struggling with acne breakouts, we love our ZO SKIN HEALTH line up of products (which by the way is on sale for the month of July). Also note that our acne regimen protocol treats acne-prone skin.

  • DRY SKIN - Summer months usually bring high humidity so dry skin is still a very real issue many of us deal with. Spending time indoors with an air conditioner can lead to dry and irritated skin as well as being outdoors in the breeze and warm sun.
  • FOLLICULITIS. If you have ever experienced this, you will know is similar to acne breakouts and forms similar looking blemishes out of hair follicles instead of pores. As sweat, bacteria, and oils form on your skin, they can make their way into your hair follicles and start creating itchy inflamed bumps. Folliculitis is most common among men and when you spend a lot of time in a hot tub, do heavy workouts at the gym, or go through the hot and humid summer months wearing tight clothing. One of the easiest ways to prevent folliculitis is by wearing lighter and more airy clothing so proper airflow can cool and dry your skin. TIP: If you’re noticing a lot of breakouts from your follicles, try using a warm compress cloth on the area. It can drain the bumps and provide quick relief. If itchiness is a problem, a basic hydrocortisone cream can almost instantly soothe the affected area.
  • SUNBURN. This is arguably the most common skin issue you may run into over the summer. Did you know that you don’t have to spend a lot of time outdoors to notice the effects of UVA and UVB exposure on your skin? While small amounts of UV exposure can provide a nice tan, too much exposure can potentially lead to a higher risk of skin cancer and premature aging. When spending any amount of time in the sunlight, especially on high UV days, always be sure to wear a high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 50) such as our ZO® sunscreens. These offer scientifically superior protection with the broadest, most comprehensive range available. Our advanced Triple-Spectrum Protection® shields against UVA and UVB rays, high-energy visible (HEV) light, IR-A (infrared) rays and pollution. In addition to the skin on your face, remember to protect your lips as well!
